Nashik Road Station to Ramkund & Panchavati: Transit Guide

How to cover the roughly 10 km from Nashik Road station to Ramkund by auto, cab or bus, what to ask before paying, and how the Kumbh changes the plan.

Most pilgrims who arrive in Nashik by train step off at Nashik Road railway station, which is not in Panchavati. Nashik's own tourism pages put the station about 10 km from Ramkund, the main bathing ghat on the Godavari, while the Central Bus Stand (CBS) is only about 2 km from it. That gap, a ride of roughly 10 km through city traffic, is where first-time visitors lose time and money. This guide explains the realistic ways to cover it, what to ask before you pay, and how the plan changes on Kumbh days.

First, Know Where You Are Going

Ramkund sits in the Panchavati area on the Godavari. Kalaram Temple, Sita Gumpha, Sundarnarayan Temple and the Godavari ghats are all within walking distance of it. If you tell a driver only "Panchavati", you may be dropped on a road that is closed to vehicles on busy days, so name the specific spot: Ramkund, Kalaram Mandir, or your hotel or dharamshala. Keep its address and phone number saved offline.

Option 1: Auto-Rickshaw or Taxi From Nashik Road

This is the simplest door-to-door option, particularly with luggage, children or elderly relatives. Auto-rickshaws are meant to run on the meter. In practice many drivers quote a fixed price at railway stations, so ask for the meter first. If the driver refuses, agree the fare before you get in, and do not accept "we will see at the end". App-based cabs show the fare in advance, which removes the argument, but expect surge pricing and longer waits when a train from Mumbai or Pune has just arrived. On normal days the 10 km can take well under an hour; on a major snan day it can take far longer, or be impossible beyond a barricade.

Option 2: City Bus (Citilink) and MSRTC

Nashik's city bus service, Citilink, and state MSRTC buses both link the Nashik Road area with the main bus stand and the Panchavati side. We are deliberately not printing route numbers or fares here: they are revised often, and a wrong number sends you the wrong way. Check the route board at the stop, ask the conductor whether the bus goes to CBS or to Panchavati, and use a maps app to confirm. Buses are the cheapest option but are crowded in the morning and evening, and they are a poor choice with heavy bags.

The destination, seen from the river: the Godavari ghats in the heart of the city, which is where the roughly 10 km ride from Nashik Road ends.

Option 3: Bus to CBS, Then a Short Ride or Walk

Because CBS is only about 2 km from Ramkund, a common low-cost approach is to take any bus or shared ride to the Central Bus Stand and then continue by a short auto ride. If your accommodation is near Panchavati and the roads are open, you can often walk the last stretch. On restricted days the final approach is on foot in any case.

Ramkund is the point most pilgrims name when they hire an auto or cab. On busy days the last stretch to it is on foot.

Luggage: Where to Leave It

Railway stations generally have a cloakroom where bags can be deposited for a fee against a receipt. Confirm that the Nashik Road cloakroom is open, its hours and its maximum storage period when you arrive, and do not leave valuables, medicines or documents in a stored bag. Many hotels and dharamshalas will hold your bags before check-in or after check-out if you ask politely. On busy Kumbh days, travelling light and checking in first is the most reliable approach. Whatever you use, keep a photo of your baggage receipt, and lock your bags.

How the Kumbh Changes the Plan

Maharashtra's published transport blueprint for the Simhastha describes a tiered system: outer parking hubs, shuttle transfer points linked by a large MSRTC bus network, and pedestrian-only zones near Ramkund and Trimbakeshwar. Reports mention 46 outer parking locations and around 4,500 buses, although these are planning figures that may change. The practical result for you is simple: on snan days do not expect an auto or cab to reach Ramkund. Plan to be dropped at a transfer point, walk the last part, and add at least an hour to every journey.

  • Arrive before the evening rush and avoid the main bathing days if you can; the dates are in our snan calendar.
  • Pre-book accommodation within walking distance of your first darshan stop.
  • Download offline maps and screenshot your route; mobile networks slow down in large crowds.
  • Carry small change for autos and buses.
  • Women travelling alone at night should prefer app-based cabs or a pre-arranged hotel pickup.
