Because the Dwitiya tithi begins on the afternoon of 10 November, the festival is observed on 11 November in India, with the tilak done in the Aparahna (afternoon) window. Abroad, some calendars show 10 November; use the date and time for your own city.

What is Bhai Dooj?

Bhai Dooj (bhratri dwitiya) is the last day of the Diwali festival and celebrates the bond between a brother and a sister. The sister invites her brother, applies a tilak on his forehead, does his aarti, offers sweets and prays for his long life and well-being. The brother thanks her, often by touching her feet or giving her his blessing, and gives her a gift. In Maharashtra the day is Bhau Beej, and the aarti is the aukshan that you can read about in our Diwali Padwa guide.

The story of Yama and Yamuna

Yama, the lord of death, and his sister Yamuna are the children of Surya, the Sun. Yamuna invited her brother for years, and on the Dwitiya of Kartik’s bright half Yama finally visited. She welcomed him with a tilak, an aarti and a meal. Moved by her love, Yama gave her a boon: brothers who receive a tilak and a meal from their sisters on this day will be remembered kindly by him. For this reason the day is also called Yama Dwitiya, and it is believed that bathing in the Yamuna on this day is auspicious.

Bhai Dooj puja vidhi: step by step

  1. Prepare the thali. Arrange kumkum (roli), akshata (rice), a lit diya, a sweet and a coconut or fruit, with a little water.
  2. Seat the brother on a low seat, facing east or north, on a small rangoli or a square of rice flour if you wish.
  3. Apply the tilak. The sister applies kumkum on his forehead and places a few grains of rice on it.
  4. Do the aarti. She circles the lit diya in front of his face and says a prayer for his long life and happiness.
  5. Offer a sweet and, in some families, tie a sacred thread or moli on his wrist.
  6. The brother’s response. He honours her, often by touching her feet or giving his blessing, and gives her a gift.
  7. Serve a meal. The sister serves a meal she has cooked, and the family eats together.

  • Kumkum (roli) and akshata (unbroken rice)
  • A sweet such as laddu, barfi or peda
  • A coconut or fruit and a little water in a small bowl
  • A sacred thread (moli) or a rakhi-style thread, if your family ties one
  • Fresh flowers or a small garland
  • A gift for the brother or sister, as you choose

What the brother and sister give

The sister gives her brother her blessing, the tilak and a meal, and often a handmade sweet or a small gift. The brother gives his sister a gift in return (in Maharashtra often called ovalni after the aarti). The value is not the point, and many families keep it simple. Here are ideas for both.

These are suggestions, not prices; shop within a budget you are comfortable with and avoid borrowing for gifts.

What to wear on Bhai Dooj

Traditional festival colours are popular: yellow, red, orange, pink and gold for the sister, and cream, maroon or a bright kurta for the brother. Many families wear new or ethnic clothes. Choose what you are comfortable in; there is no rule about colour.

If your brother or sister lives far away

  • Send a small packet of kumkum, rice, a sweet and a small diya a few days before so the tilak can be done on the day.
  • Do a video call at the tilak time and have the brother apply the tilak himself while the sister does the aarti.
  • Send a gift by courier early, because deliveries are slow around Diwali.
  • Cousins and friends can also celebrate; many families include them.
